27/06/04 First trip to a local show and guess what? The front wheel bearing breaks up, had to wait over an hour for the recovery truck to take me back 10 miles home! So now i have to find some replacement bearings, I will change all the front two sets, then at least i know they are OK.
And later once i got back home
Front bearing shot to bits, stub axle not damaged, went back to the show to see if i could get bearings, took with me a KDF hub and stub axle,could not get bearings to fit, later found out that I've 52 hubs fitted so the blinking bearings i had in my hand would have fitted!!! What a day 28/06/04 Went to local bearing supplier, took broken bearing and the inner one i had taken out, managed to get bearings and seals for both front wheels, went home and started to fit them, inside one tapped in no problem, came to fit outer and its to loose in the hub/ brake drum, went back to shop to get over sized bearing and cant get one!, when the bearing went it looks like it as worn the area in the hub were the bearing outer case sits, so now I have two options. 1) I take an original KDF hub/ brake drum and because it is a smaller diameter have it reamed out to take the 52mm outer bearing and the inner reamed out to fit the inner bearing. 2) I have the 1952 hub/ brake drum reamed out over size a mm or two depending on wall thickness, and a sleeve made to fit between the outer bearing case and the seating area for the bearing in the hub/ brake drum to give me a tight fit. will let you know which way i go, and what is the best way to go. 03/07/04 Got KDF drum reamed out cost me £60, in the mean time the night before I had put the old drum back on and tried some bearing seal, this at first didn't look like it was going to work but ended up being ok so have left the 1952 drum on. Now have checked the other side, all seems OK but will get another KDF drum turned and I have started to rebuild a complete new front steering / suspension ready to drop in. |
