05/06/06 Been working on finishing off the engine I started years back, all done now and ready to drop in to my 43. This is the engine shown in the engine rebuild pages, But now finished off with all the ancillary added. The engine in the 43 at the moment is a 30 ps, its getting tired now so time to try out this one!! cant wait to see it in the 43 and fingers crossed all is OK.
18/06/06 Dropped engine into Kubel
17/06/06 Spent the day taking out and re fitting the engine, all went OK till I came to start the engine, I had no spark, spent hours trying to find out why, But gave up for the day at about 4.30, straight to my swimming pool to chill out. 18/06/06 Started again to try to find why no spark. any way thanks to some Guy that was passing we managed to find out the problem, It was the HT lead to coil, I have a flat top dizzy cap with the spike which goes through the cable, the plastic outer cable was not breaking but just pushing up on to the spike and so no connection was being made, cut this out and I have a spark!! Fired up the engine, Bit of a timing miss fire but nothing to worry about, Tuned that in and was just letting the engine idle over for a while, then bang!!! quickly switched the engine off, had a look around and couldn't see any thing wrong, tried to start it again to find a funny noise, so now I have come up with the fly wheel has come loose!!! Bummer, no real damage I hope just a loss of man hours to drop engine out again and re fit. Still at least I know the engine will run sweet once this is sorted so happy on one way and peed off in another! 01/07/06 Been working on the fly wheel, as I thought it had come off, when i took the engine out I discovered that the 4 x 6mm dowels were sheared and the holes in the end of the crank over sized, I drill them to 7mm and tried new 7mm dowels, every time I dogged the flywheel up it wasn't sat right and wasn't sitting level when it was turned, (Bigger gap between flywheel and casing on one side) I tried another flywheel thinking this might help, No its the same, then I tried a different nut and it worked! The new nut that I had bought wasn't formed right when it was sitting against the flywheel, Used a bearing lock sealant and dogged the flywheel nut up tight using a 5ft scaffold tube on the end of my extension bar. Dropped engine into the Kubel today, only took 20 minutes from start to finish so well pleased, Turned engine over and managed to get it running again although I've got to set the timing again etc and fine tune the carb, Bloody battery went on me so got that on charge over night tonight and will have a play again in the morning. 02/07/06 Had battery on charge all night so it was OK today. Managed to start engine but it took time, checked timing which was a mile out, left the engine running for half an hour to warm up and to just run it in a bit. Started to do Carb adjustment, had the odd back fire when I noticed that the K manifold as a pin hole in it by the down tube (could see light when it blew back), so its sucking air through it, I used a petrol tank repair putty to seal hole, left to dry and go hard. Came back hours later to start the engine again, It seemed slow to turn over but managed to get the engine running again. No power or it feels like its running on 3, checked all spark plugs for a spark and all OK there, can only be the carb setting now, No visible oil leaks so far, once running engine runs sweet bar the odd back fire, thing that worry's me is the starting of the engine, any ideas? 08/07/06 Changed carb as I am sucking in air, The K manifold seems OK now its been fixed, put another carb on and off it went, No back fire at all and I have power, checked the old Carb and found that I was sucking in air through the butterfly spindle hole in the carb body, hadn't noticed the wear before, so will have to have it bushed to fix that one. Slight oil leak from a push rod tube but can sort that out easy enough. Ignition light still isn't coming on but it is a local problem to the dash (No power to bulb). So now I have to add all the remaining bits and run the engine in, fingers crossed here! |
