Newest photo's and info to bottom of the page 15/10/03 So now starts the rebuilding of the rear body.
Welded inner engine wall to rear down support. (wish i hadn't till later)
I welded inside of the rear engine wall as this is not seen later.
Yes i know its not level on the back yet, this was taken while i was still setting up the rear
I've have found that before I start to weld its best to use a few self tapping screws to hold panels together (even the best repro panels are not always square)
The original corner part had a slight "hump" on it this held me up for ages as I hadn't noticed it before, I couldn't get that side down enough.
Not good notice the side ribs not lining through got to be altered!!!!
The repro wing is not correct, it stands out from the back by about 25mm, shame as it means I've got to cut the back of it off and try to get it right 16/10/03 Well what a day. No photo's to add but some info. I have spent all today trying to get the repro body panels to line up, The rear quarters are not right at all, the area were the inner wheel arch should meet the old wheel arch is different in shape, the inner engine compartment walls I welded to the up and over supports were to long so i couldn't get the back down to the right size (the two bits in the first photo above), To get the ribs on the door to run through with the rear quarter was a right pain in the arse, then the rear quarters were to low for the up and over supports, so I had to lower the engine side walls again (3rd photo from bottom of above). so if anyone is doing the same as what I am doing with mine this is how I would start next time. (this is excepting that you have fitted all bits to any panels that should have bits added to it) Offer rear quarter to body, make sure the doors are fitted as this is one of the important places to start with as the door is set in place. the other is the rear removable panel at the front of the engine,Make sure you've refitted this back as it gives you a fixed width to work with. and fix temporary with a couple of self tapping screws, one by the bottom area of were the door sits in and the other to bottom plate by the side of the engine wall/wheel arch, above were the triangle fits the rear quarter/wheel arch. (can just see it in the 5th photo down far left bottom) Next offer the up and over supports to the Kubel and the rear quarter, make sure that the bottom part by the tow hooks is down and level with the plate mentioned above. Hold in place with a few clamps. Next build the rear Firewall and the part with the grill in it up and place on the up and over supports, hold in place with a couple of self tapping screws (see page before this one) Next offer the side panels of the engine compartment up,(needs a bit of jiggling here) these fit to the u shaped main chassis, the Firewall the up and over supports and the rear quarter. so now you should look like the 2nd photo down. If it all lines up your luckier than me!, I would hold the Firewall and engine compartment in place again with some self tapping screws, Check that both the engine compartment lid and the storage compartment lid are going to fit, and don't forget to allow for the hinges when spacing the lids out (if they are not already fixed) remove the clamps holding the rear quarter and the up and over supports and you should be able to lift the complete back end as one, weld this all together if your sure its right ( I would double check by taking it off, go for a coffee and then offer the lot back up again and see that its right). Next fit the rear body back to the Kubel, I am going to weld inside the engine walls were the weld can not be seen easily, so you will have to remove a rear quarter to do this, weld where needed. and good luck!!!!! |
