History:

After the second World War, German be a very poor Country and control by many other Country Inc Red Army, Europe Country got a lot of US Jeep, But that is too small and too old, British Army control the VW Factory at German, They want War time Germany off road vehicle, but it was not easy to build the VW 82, 82e, 87 and 166 off road vehicle any more, because many off road gear box and axle from the Red Army control area. This is why They just use some old and used parts to build a little off road battle ( a little No of VW82e and 2 VW87 ) for the Army after WWII. British without a small 4X4 off Road Vehicle, Rover copy the MB/GPW Jeep with a centre steering wheel and put a small Rover 1.6L Engine. This was the Land Rover prototype. The Land Rover saw the light of day at the Amsterdam Motor Show in April 1948,That year British motor industry was pushing desperately for exports and unveiling its first truly new postwar product in the attempt to get them.

The first production model was a brand new strong box girder chassis with a expensive aluminium body, a simple open pick up type with a canvas hood and a estate model were offered a few months after quantity production began at the Solihull factory in July 1948. eighty 80 inch wheel base, 4 wheel leaf suspension, power by a F-head 1595cc petrol 4 cylinder engine ( same as Rover P3 car's motor ) part time 4wd system with Hi and Low range and front, middle, and rear PTO for agricultural ,industry , towing and light recovery use as well. After WWII, the Automobile market is very poor, every body want a car can both use for work and carry people. The Land Rover most buyer from Government such as police, fire Dept, Airport, workshop, Army, Civil market from farm and some small Industry company.

This Series I Land Rover began its military career with the British Army in 1949 and had test in the Korean War. The Land Rover Series I went on to become the British Army's standard quarter-ton 4x4 light vehicle, But at same time Austin got a Champ 4x4 nice small fiend car at market as well.

In 1952 the small 1.6L motor was replaced by a 2-L petrol engine and a new 107 inch long wheel base model push to the market, in 1954 80 inch wheel base was replaced by a new 86 inch wheel chassis. 1957 a new 2057CC Diesel put into this Vehicle, but it is always under power. This was the first diesel model for 4x4 in the Europe market, But it is a not reliable diesel, in Winter the engine is not easy to start.

In February 1958 the Series II was introduced in both 88 inch and 107 inch wheel base with a 2.25 petrol engine. In 1958 a new Series II pick up was introduced on a 109 inch long wheel base.

The Series IIA introduced in September 1961. a minor modification with the 2.25L 4 cylinder engine or a 2.25 Diesel Engine, a large No of Land Rover 4x4 off road vehicle been export to every where in the world. But at the same time , Japanese powerful 4.0L 6 cylinder 4x4 at market too. at

early 1967 a new 2.6L 6 cylinder engine was offered on a long wheel base model or for a Series IIB 1.5 ton Forward control ( FC110 ).This is a strong Land Rover, all chassis and Axle not same as Series II, not like the Jeep Forward control. The series IIA model produce until 1971.

Many Commercial Logistic chassis 88 SWB with a simple modifications ( such as off road tire, military light, Heavy duty Nato tow hook, military front and rear bumper,12V water proof Elec. engine system etc ) for military use, most are soft top GS model, some were diesel anti-spark vehicles.

in 1966 Land Rover developed the 564 KG air - portable military vehicle prototype.

This was the first 24V SWB Land Rover with Water proof ignition elec. system.( Before only LWB Military model got 24V water proof ignition electric system and the chassis is a high leg model and more strong than the Civil model.)

1970 Land Rover build a bigger, heavier, comfortable, high capacity estate, This vehicle use ex-GM3.5 light alloy V8 engine join with a all new 4 speed full time 4x4 gear box, a new 100 inch wheel base chassis, front and rear beam axle with long travel coil spring suspension.4 wheel disc brake. A new 2 door estate car body put on the hi-leg chassis looks smart, Top speed near 100mph.This was the best 4x4 at that time at the 4x4 market.

Series III from 1971-1983,it got SWB and LWB, more than 30 body model, Inc 109 high capacity pick up, 109 high capacity pick up hood, 109 high capacity hood with rear side window, 109 3 door hard top with fixed side window, 109 hard top with fixed side window and side hinged rear door, 109 pick up, 109 pick up hood, 109 hard top, 109 chassis cab, 109 chassis, 109 station wagon, 88 soft top, 88 soft top with side window, 88 station wagon, 88 hard top, 88 pick up, 88chassis, 88 chassis cab etc.

1972 Land rover build a all new forward control I ton 4x4 truck for Army. This Vehicle use a heavy duty ladder chassis and both axle with a Range Rover ex-GM 3.5 alloy V8 and a full time 4x4 ,4 speed gear box, 4 wheel leaf spring all around, The vehicle call FC 101 got 12V model and 24 V model.

In the same time Land Rover build a little Series III Forward control, most for fire service, base on civilian 109 chassis and this vehicle is not strong enough, I remember HK have some at that time.

Until end of 70s, over 100 Country use Land Rover 88 & 109, not because the Land Rover is very good, very useful, very powerful and very reliable, but they must use British car like HK British got many colony at that time. the Gas & Diesel Engine is very small, & Diesel is not pic1reliable,

Axle is not strong enough, At 1980 Series III got a optional 3.5 V8 gas motor, This motor and gear box same as 1970 Range Rover. In the same time all 4 cylinder Rover 2.25 Petrol motor use 5 bearing engine. Until 1983 New 110 use Range Rover coil spring suspension & full time 4X4 system. Until today the new Defender still use the 110 chassis, just with a new 5 speed or a 6 speed gear box and a 2.5 TDI motor.

This car also got a 93 inch SWB wheel base and a 130 inch wheel LLWB base. 1985 a all new 93 inch wheel base 90 Ninety model replace the series III 88 SWB.

At 1989 Land Rover got a all new car to the Market, it was the Discovery, This vehicle price between Range Rover and Defender, with a all new 7 seat body and a 1970s Range Rover old chassis, power by a old 3.5V8 or a 2.5 TDI or a 2.0 Mpi Gas motor.

The one we got is a 1980 made Series III 88 inch SWB soft top GS Land Rover. This was basically a civilian model with some modifications for military use model, a large number of CL vehicles were service at Army.

This CL off road vehicle service at British Army in HK since 1980, it is a very nice condition, with a 12V elec. system but all water proof ignition, coil and plug ( This is a option accessories made from US for Civilian Land Rover SWB use by Military. )
